Research has demonstrated a correlation between sleep apnea and heart disease
If your partner has expressed concerns about your excessively loud snoring, it’s possible that you are dealing with a more serious issue beyond simply irritating the person next to you in bed.
Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder characterized by interruptions or shallow breathing during sleep. Typically, it is a chronic condition, persisting over time.
These breathing interruptions can last from a few seconds to several minutes, occurring frequently, with over 30 instances per hour. Upon resuming normal breathing, it is often accompanied by a loud snort or choking sound.
As a result of the disrupted breathing, sleep apnea often disrupts the transition from deep sleep to light sleep.
The interrupted sleep caused by sleep apnea can lead to daytime fatigue, making it a major contributor to excessive daytime sleepiness.
Sleep apnea frequently goes undiagnosed as individuals may not be aware of their condition until a sleeping partner or family member informs them of their loud snoring or breathing pauses during sleep.
Obstructive sleep apnea is the most prevalent form of sleep apnea and is commonly observed in individuals who are overweight.
The disorder is more prevalent in men compared to women, particularly among African American and Hispanic men.
In addition to sleep disturbances, sleep apnea has been linked to heart disease, which remains the primary cause of mortality in the United States. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), individuals with sleep apnea are estimated to be two to four times more likely to develop abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) compared to those without this condition. The AHA also notes a 140 percent increase in the risk of heart failure and a 30 percent increase in the risk of coronary heart disease associated with sleep apnea. Moreover, sleep apnea is closely associated with high blood pressure and stroke.
If you suspect that you may have sleep apnea or if your partner observes breathing pauses during your sleep, it is important to consult with your physician. A sleep study can provide a definitive diagnosis of sleep apnea.
